There is a new political party, Popvox, in sweden that have an interesting concept. They are a neutral party that wants the swedish population to vote in all issues and they want to have a "vågmästarroll". Dont know the word in english, but it means they want to have the position in between our two blocks and balance the power. Maybe this can give us some idea of how a greener society can look like?

Personal Democracy European Forum

Related to the “Personal Democracy European Forum” happend just a week ago in Barcellona, I found an interesting research made by Linkfluence, focusing on “the European political web, its structure and dynamics”, political communities in Europe and the links between those communities. Well, they mapped just 4 countries France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands but still I think it could be interesting to see how communities and political bloggers dialogue between them.

Importance of consumer management

Because of social media's influence and power, it is essential for organizations to have a good consumer management. An example where that wasn't the case, is the video "United breaks guitars" by Dave Carroll.



Maybe some of you have already heard of this, but for those who haven't. The song is a result of a nine-month struggle between Carroll and United Airlines, who broke Carroll's guitar when handling the luggage. The story is told in the song.
The song got a lot of attention and affected United Airline's image.

YouTube Celebrity

In today’s seminar someone asked for an example of a social media created celebrity, that is, a situation in which a star was born and bred outside the domains of industrial information economy. I think this one could be one (may be not a very good one but one no less).

The person goes by the name of LisaNova and writes, acts and produces nonsense, comedy sketches for YouTube. With over 160,000 subscribers, her channel is currently the 40th most viewed on YouTube. She was later recruited by MADtv as a featured role player.

Why social media is needed

George Monbiot writes a scathing column about the poor job local newpapers do in Britain when it comes to representing the views of the people, of questioning power (the "watchdog" function of media), of creating original content (as apart for reproducing stuff from elsewhere) etc. To him, local newspapers deserve to die because the do such a poor job of doing what they are supposed to do in a democratic society:

"Like my colleagues, I mourn [the] death [of local newspapers]; unlike them I believe it happened decades ago. For many years the local press has been one of Britain’s most potent threats to democracy, championing the overdog, misrepresenting democratic choices, defending business, the police and local elites from those who seek to challenge them."

This perspective goes well together with Benklers arguements about why social media is good for society.

Russian police shares his mind on You Tube

This is a great example of how we can use social media to speak out our mind in a way that wouldnt be possible with the old media. In this case its a russian police that is upset with how the police is forced to put up with corruption in Russia. He got fired after his posting. surprise! 'Two-day conference on Wikipedia at Stockholm University next week. The program is in Swedish so I won't bother to translate the event.

Costs 1200 for both days - half price for students (includes food).

Inside Google's Android and Apple's iPhone OS as business models

We will see sooner or later a big match between Google's Android and Apple's iPhone OS in smart phone platforms. This two platforms are following different business models: Google's Android is free and open-sourced, and Apple's iPhone OS is proprietary and exclusive right-based.
This interesting article is talking about the different business models of Android and iPhone OS, and mostly focused on estimated problems of the open source software, Google's Android. (You would expect this if you saw the website address. It's from appleinsider...) However, I want to believe the power of global collaboration in Open Source Software. What do you think?

Death of a media empire

This has more to do with traditional media than with Internet and social media, but since we discussed traditional media, media empires and power (Italy and Silvio Berlusconi) at yesterdays lecture I think the story of the recent bankrupcy of Canada's biggest media empire, Canwest Global Communications, could be of interest. A tale of what happens when you overextend and buy up smaller companies right, left and center.

Interesting documentary about virtual worlds

Hey everyone!

There was a documentary on TV the other night called "Virtual Perfection" that I found interresting and relevant to this course. It is about how these virtual worlds like Second Life, World of Warcraft, Linage etc. work.

Some of the topics are how people not connected to the company owning the software can earn money on it, how events in these worlds affect us and how these societies resemble real life in alot of aspects. I will stop my description there and let you make your own picture of it. :)

The documentary was made for an English TV channel so it should be no problem for anyone watching it (the first minute of the stream is in Swedish with a guy presenting the movie, don't be intimidated by it). The only thing that might be a bit frustrating is that there are a few interviews with Chinese and Korean people that are only translated to Swedish.

Listen to Lawrence Lessig talk in the parlament

The well know Internet legal scholar Lawrence Lessig will give a public talk in the Parlament on Wednesday November 18 at 10-12. (It happens to collide with a seminar if you are in group 1).

Lawrence is the author of the popular books "Code", "The future of ideas", "Remix" and "Free culture".

The invitation below is in Swedish, but Lessig is American so the talk will be in English. It states that there is limitid space, so you have to get in touch with Isabelle Midy at the Royal Library if you want to go.

En av världens främsta auktoriteter på upphovsrätt i den digitala domänen,

den amerikanske juridikprofessorn Lawrence Lessig, kommer till Sveriges

Riksdag för en föreläsning om behovet av en förändrad upphovsrätt i de

digitala nätverkens tidsålder. Lessig är en av grundarna till Creative

Commons och en välkänd förespråkare för reducerade upphovsrättsvillkor på

internet. Lessig har i otaliga artiklar, föredrag och böcker visat på de

orimligheter som dagens lagstiftning leder till i den digitala domänen.

Många av de idéer som ligger till grund för den svenska debatten om

fildelning och upphovsrätt har sitt ursprung i Lessigs arbete. Han har som

samhällsdebattör figurerat flitigt i amerikanska medier, och har till och

med varit en karaktär i tv-serien Vita huset.

Lessig är inte motståndare till upphovsrätt i dess ursprungliga

bemärkelse, det vill säga som skydd för kommersiell kreativitet under den

tid när en vara har en affärsmässig potential. Däremot är han skeptisk mot

de långa skyddstider som lika motverkar en kreativ användning av vårt

kulturarv.

Lawrence Lessig är professor i juridik vid Harvard University, och

författare till en rad böcker som exempelvis Free Culture (2004), Code:

Version 2.0 (2006) och Remix (2008). Han är grundande styrelsemedlem i

Creative Commons, och driver http://www.lessig.org/blog/.

Föreläsningen äger rum onsdagen den 18/11 i Riksdagens första kammarsal

mellan kl. 10 och 12. Begränsat antal platser.
