Facebook is planning to go public on the stock market sometime early next year. The anticipated initial value for the company is estimated to be around $100 billion(!) . The article mentions that it is greater than twice as much as Hewlett Packard. This really shows how big Facebook has grown and how important it is for the internet.
We will have to wait and see if the value will be this big, but if it is it will be record breaking.
Right now Google is the highest initial-valued American IT-company, with $23 billion in 2004. It will be interesting to see if Facebook accually will be valued more than four times higher than Google.
