Closing the media gap: the value of online content

Related to the last lecture of Social Media Technologies, here is one article about closing the "nowadays media gap".
The article is about a new economic model - a paywall on the online version for some of his owned papers. The paywall's function would be that users would pay a small token amount for the subscription. Colin Horgan, the author discusses in the article whether the modell would work or not. Horgan explains and criticizes the model at the same time - with presenting nowadays internet user habits.
However the article is from 2010 the topic is related to our topic and between the comments one can find metaphores that raises interest.

Here you can find the article.

Facebook bought Gowalla

Facebook haven't commented on it, but according to CNN they have acquired location sharing service Gowalla, which recently tried to recreate itself as travel guide site after loosing against Foursquare.
Employees of the company will move to Palo Alto and work on Facebook's Timeline feature, which was introduced at the F8 conference months ago, but still only available for developers (or curious users like me who pretend to be a developer).
According to the article, Facebook has a habit of buying promising startups and killing them off to deploy their developers on other projects. FB aims to make about 20 purchases in 2011, up from 10 last year.

Record value for Facebook

Facebook is planning to go public on the stock market sometime early next year. The anticipated initial value for the company is estimated to be around $100 billion(!) . The article mentions that it is greater than twice as much as Hewlett Packard. This really shows how big Facebook has grown and how important it is for the internet.

We will have to wait and see if the value will be this big, but if it is it will be record breaking.
Right now Google is the highest initial-valued American IT-company, with $23 billion in 2004. It will be interesting to see if Facebook accually will be valued more than four times higher than Google.

Klout Score Anxiety

I found the klout-score very interesting from the guest lecture and did some research. To me its seems extreme to base your social media life on a high Klout-score, but maybe its the next step in this social media trend. Here is a rather humorous and interesting article. Time to have your Klout-score in your E-mail signature?

In follow up of the Heineken commercial that Therese was talking about, here is the Danish (not Dutch ;) ) equivalent of the Heineken commercial.

Is Google turning into Microsoft?

Steve Jobs said that Google is turning into Microsoft. He suggested Larry Page to focus on few products and making them really good, instead of letting all of the other products and projects drag them down.

Interesting article about the parallels between Google and Microsoft, do you agree on some of these?
