  1. I think it's kind of cool that the internet has this subculture where the memes are so famous. If you often use internet you probably know memes like “Epic Sax Guy”, “Pedo Bear” and “Nyan Cat”. But I’ve friends that use internet much less (approximately four hours per week) than I do and they don’t know these memes. But still some memes are really “famous”. “Ginger kid” has been shown more than 20 million times on Youtube and that’s the total population number of all the Scandinavian countries together.

So I think it’s a fact that you can become a star on the internet. But are they famous enough to get out of the sub culture group of the internet users and out to the rest of the world? How hard is the barrier to break?

  2. It is true, that it is possible to become a star on the internet, but in my opinion internet stars can most commonly be compared to "one-hit wonder"-artists. They become famous e.g. for one YouTube video, everyone knows them for 2 weeks and then are forgotten again. Just look at "Evolution of dance". The videos has been watched by over 180 million people and the topic has been discussed all over the media. The guy was hyped as a star, was on loads of shows, but although he made new videos none of them were really popular.
So yes, you can become a star, but don't think that you will stay one for long!

  3. That might be a good comparison: Internet hit = one-hit wonder
